In February 2008 the More London project rolled out a Mace Sustain BMOS (Behavioural Management of Safety) programme, which is a safety process that focuses on praising safe behaviour and getting to the root cause of any at-risk behaviours. This helps projects to effectively manage unwanted behaviour and motivate people to perform safely.
More London's team took real ownership of the programme, arranging training sessions and putting together a combined team of Mace representatives and managers from the trade contractors to observe and analyse safe and unsafe acts, to praise safe behaviour and promote a healthy safety culture on site.
The BMOS programme has help promote and maintain an excellent safety record on the project and the success of the programme has been helped significantly by being led by key operations directors.
The site ESH Manager has had a pivotal role in integrated BMOS into the projects health and safety structure, and most importantly the high uptake and contribution of the trade contractors helped make the More London BMOS programme a resounding success. At present there are nine representatives from different trade contractors that form part of the BMOS team together with the Mace project team, with several more about to join the team at the next round of training due to take place at the end of August 08.
The programme has also help improve communication about safety between the project team, trade contractors and individuals on site.
Phil Webber, BMOS representative at More London Plot 7 said: "The BMOS programme has really helped us to look at safety differently at More London, it allows us to talk about safety in a positive way, and gets all the trades and Mace together to focus on solutions for improving safety, praising people for getting things right, challenging people and involving them on safety, and gets away from shouting at people and blaming individuals. You can also see how this spills over onto the site the way the guys talk to each other between other trades about safety."
