Strategic health and safety / CDM-C services on Cross Rail

Following the successful supply of CDM-C resource to the Cross London Rail Link Project in January 2007, Mace Sustain has also been chosen to supply Strategic Health and Safety advice, and is now placed in an excellent position to allow Mace Sustain to further develop their excellent relationship with CLRL.

Crossrail is a new cross-London rail link that has been developed to serve the south-east of England. The scale and complexity of Crossrail is considerable; the requirement is to operate Ten-car trains, providing a peak service of 24 trains per hour on dedicated subterranean infrastructure through central London and utilising Network Rail infrastructure, north-east and west of London and on the south-east branch to Abbey Wood. The extent of the infrastructure construction works can be summarized as follows:

  • 119km existing surface rail infrastructure upgrade
  • 23km of new subsurface (parallel tunnels) railway infrastructure
  • 27 existing surface station upgrades, including 11 major reconstructions
  • 14 shafts for ventilation, escape and intervention
  • 8 new subsurface stations in central London
  • 4 sidings and 1 depot
  • 1 control centre
  • Modifications to existing surface railways over a route length of 76km
  • Provision of all necessary railway systems

Since January 2007, Mace Sustain, have been supplying a broad spectrum of health and safety advice within this £15billion project. This has included CDM Coordination and the provision of strategic advice to the project team on overall Project health and safety governance.

Mace Sustain will be playing a key role in advising the project team in matters of Incident Management, Occupational Health, Behavioural Safety, Competence Management and Leadership.

The vision of the CLRL, with the support of Mace Sustain team, is to deliver a world-class, affordable railway, through effective partnerships and project excellence. This translates in health and safety to a vision of:

  • Health and safety excellence as a client
  • Exemplary health and safety performance from CLRL consultants and clients
  • Promoting a positive safety culture across the project
  • Delivering proactive management of health and safety in design

MLogic were commissioned to provide specialist overview information in relation to the construction security provision for phase 1 for the Crossrail development. MLogic were then commissioned on phase 2 of the project to implement and investigate further into Crossrail's security requirements from land acquisition through to construction handover.
